APPLY ONLINE FOR FELLOWS TRACK SYMPOSIUM

The ATS is excited to announce the launch of the ATS Fellows Track Symposium at ATS 2012. This year’s symposium will provide for travel scholarships to pulmonary, critical care and sleep fellows to attend a two-day course covering cutting-edge topics in the field of respiratory medicine.

To apply or to nominate a fellow, please complete an online application and upload a Training Program Letter of Support.

The 2012 Fellows Track Symposium is made possible by a generous educational grant from Genentech, the underwriting supporter of the symposium.

The full schedule is now online for this annual three-and-a-half day event, which one attendee described as the “best value in CME around.” If you are a busy practitioner who needs the latest information in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine, join the ATS from March 1 to 4, in Dallas, for the Society’s 17th Annual State of the Art Course (SOTA). The ATS has designated the course for approximately 30 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM.

NIH FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

The National Institutes of Health Common Fund has issued two Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) for the Health Care Systems (HCS) Research Collaboratory program. The overall goal of this program is to strengthen the national capacity to implement cost-effective large-scale research studies that engage healthcare delivery organizations as research partners. These FOAs solicit applications for a Coordinating Center and Pragmatic Trials Demonstration Projects.

Coordinating Center letters of intent are due March 27, 2012. The application receipt date is April 27, 2012.

Pragmatic Trials Demonstration Projects letters of intent are due April 2, 2012. The application receipt date is May 2, 2012.

The NIH Common Fund (formerly the NIH Roadmap) encourages collaboration and supports a series of exceptionally high impact, trans-NIH programs. Additional information about the NIH Common Fund can be found at http://commonfund.nih.gov.

ATS CLINICAL CASE: ARDS SECONDARY TO AN UNUSUAL INFECTION

Test your clinical acumen by reading this case submitted by Carmen Luraschi-Monjagatta, MD, and Linda Snyder, MD.

“A 39-year-old man from Whiteriver, Arizona, presented to the Emergency Department with a five-day history of fever, chills, nausea, vomiting and cough productive of purulent sputum. He had evidence of acute kidney injury and sepsis and was transferred to our hospital for further evaluation. Upon admission to our hospital, he had diffuse abdominal pain with diarrhea, left foot pain, cough and mild dyspnea…..”

Review the full patient history, results of the physical examination and a laboratory report to answer questions posed by the authors of the case.
