APPLY FOR HHS NATIONAL HAI PREVENTION AWARDS

Showcase your team's success in reducing or eliminating healthcare-associated infections by submitting your best practices to a national awards program by December 19.

Now in its second year, the annual awards program recognizes teams of critical care professionals and healthcare institutions that show excellence, leadership and notable, sustained improvements in preventing healthcare-associated infections, specifically infections of critically ill patients.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, Office of Healthcare Quality, partnered with the Critical Care Societies Collaborative (CCSC) to launch the awards program in 2010. Members of the collaborative include the ATS, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, American College of Chest Physicians and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

In the spring of 2012, up to eight awards will be conferred in two categories according to specific criteria aligned with national standards:

  • HHS and CCSC Award for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Eliminating Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections
  • HHS and CCSC Award for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Eliminating Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia
Award recipients will have demonstrated success in reducing and eliminating central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) for 25 months or longer and shown national leadership in sharing their evidence-based initiatives.

Applications for the 2012 awards are due by December 19, 2011. The AACN will coordinate nominations and selections for the 2012 awards cycle. Visit www.aacn.org/haiawards2012 for complete details on eligibility, selection criteria and application requirements.

UPDATE OR ADD ASSEMBLY AND SECTION MEMBERSHIPS

The ATS offers 13 assemblies and 3 sections in which its members can participate.

Assemblies are subdivisions of the Society composed of members and affiliates with like interests within the broad fields of respiratory disease and critical care medicine. The purpose of an assembly is to improve the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of information, improve communication among the members and participate in the planning of the International Conference. Assemblies are also responsible for creating and updating ATS Statements. Sections are subdivisions of the assembly that focus on a specific area of interest within the scope of an assembly.

ATS members may choose to join one primary assembly and up to two secondary assemblies, and as many sections as they wish, as part of their ATS membership. To change your assembly and/or section memberships, or to join one or more if you haven't already, first visit http://www.thoracic.org/assemblies/index.php to see a list of assemblies and sections. Then send an e-mail to the ATS Concierge at membership@thoracic.org indicating 1) your full name, 2) member ID number or your city, state and country and 3) the name(s) of one primary assembly and up to two secondary assemblies and/or the sections that you wish to join.

MOBILE MUSINGS: A SIMPLER LIFE?

Web Editor Tom Stibolt, MD, dares to dream of a simpler electronic life in which his smartphone is the center of a docking station with a full keyboard and large display that replaces his desktop and laptop computers—and with a smaller add on device his smartphone is transformed into a tablet. And all his data is stored in the cloud. When will Silicon Valley turn this promising dream into reality? Read this month’s Mobile Musings by clicking here.
