ATS Meets with OMB on Silica Standard

ATS member Tee Guidotti, MD, and ATS staff met with staff at the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to urge the Obama Administration to move forward with a proposed rule to revise the Occupational Safety and Health Administration  (OSHA) standard  for silica exposure.  In the meeting, Dr. Guidotti noted that silica related disease continues to be a problem in the U.S. and noted effective control strategies are available to significantly reduce silica exposures.  The ATS recommended that OSHA adopted a standard of 0.05mg/M3  time-weighted average for up to 10 hours during a 40 hour work week.

A decision is expected in the summer of 2011 if a revised OSHA silica exposure standard will be proposed.
