Wiltz Wagner

Wiltz Wagner receives the 2004 Robert F. Grover Prize for outstanding contributions to the study of the effects of hypoxia and high altitude on the pulmonary circulation.

Wiltz Wagner has made truly seminal contributions to our understanding of the physiology and pathology of hypoxia in the pulmonary microcirculation. He developed the first modern-day video-microscopic system for assessment of pulmonary microculatory blood flow and, over the ensuing 30 year career, used it to explore fundamental mechanisms of gas exchange regulation in hypoxia such as capillary recruitment, red and white blood cell transit times, determinants of capillary flow switching, sites of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction, and other timely issues. Along with these specific scientific accomplishments, Wiltz has served as mentor for a substantial number if graduate and post-graduate students who have continued to investigate subjects broadly related to hypoxia and the lung.

John Newman was awarded in absentia the 2004 Pulmonary Circulation Assembly Leadership Award.

John Newman has provided strong leadership in the pulmonary community for decades. Part of this shows in committee work: Chairman of the NIH RAP study section, and, in our own Society, as a member of the Planning Committee, Chairman of the PC Assembly, member of the Scientific Advisory Council, and perhaps most important, Chairman of the Nominating Committee for several years (it is this committee that selects the nominees who will become the President of the Society). These are but highlights of the numerous positions of leadership he has held, enough to fill an entire career. But the best for last, for John Newman was instrumental in identifying the primary pulmonary hypertension gene, a singular achievement. It was an easy job for the committee to select John as the winner of the PC Assembly Leadership Award.
