Section Activities

The ATS section on Terrorism and Inhalational Disasters (TID) was formed in 2003 to serve as resource for the leadership and membership of ATS. Whereas the scope of our section spans numerous assemblies (Critical Care; Microbiology Tuberculosis and Pulmonary Infections [MTPI]; Environmental and Occupational Health [EOH]; and Nursing), we currently fall under the Assembly on Environmental and Occupational Health.

The section is currently in its eleventh year, and has expanded its focus to include disaster preparedness because of increased concerns about terrorist events, natural disasters, emerging infectious diseases, and industrial accidents. We are interested in both the chronic and acute effects of these disasters on the lung and pulmonary system.

In the past, we have organized post graduate courses, late breaking sessions, and plenary sessions.  Our planned major activities for the upcoming year include:

  • Work with other professional societies, federal agencies and others to develop a disaster network
  • Develop a system of volunteering within ATS, with steering toward the appropriate local, state and federal agencies.
  • Advice the ATS leadership on disaster based issues
  • Develop this web site as a key resource for information and education on disaster planning and inhalational injury
