NIOSH Sponsored Educational Opportunities in Occupational Safety and Health

EOH Training and Educational Opportunities

NIOSH - The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health offers training and research opportunities at their research facilities at Anchorage, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Morgantown, and Pittsburgh. NIOSH is the only federal agency mandated to conduct and fund occupational safety and health research and has training and research opportunities for individuals in various stages of their training or career (from undergraduate college students to full-time faculty). These opportunities can be accessed by clicking here and include the following:

  • Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS): Through this program, NIOSH trains health professionals in the principles and practice of occupational safety and health. During their two-year experience, NIOSH EIS officers not only gain knowledge of occupational safety and health, but also gain unique expertise in applied occupational epidemiology.
  • Occupational Medicine Rotation: This rotation offered by the Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) program at NIOSH typically trains residents in Occupational Medicine to investigate workplace hazards and potential work-related health effects. The rotation is, however, also available as an elective to medical students and students in other health professions.
  • Public Health Prevention Service: The primary goal of this 3-year service and training program is to develop a workforce that is skilled in planning, implementation, and evaluation of prevention programs. This goal is accomplished through a combination of structured and on-the-job training.
  • Research Associateship Programs: The National Research Council at The National Academies conducts this program in cooperation with NIOSH to provide postdoctoral scientists of unusual promise and ability, opportunities for research on problems related to Occupational Safety and Health.
