Manuscript Review CME
CME Purpose: To increase the competence of manuscript reviewers for the three ATS peer-reviewed journals, AJRCCM, AJRCMB, and PATS through instructional materials, observation and feedback.
Content Areas: The content of the ATS manuscript review CME program includes principles of manuscript review and emerging basic science and medical research in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep medicine.
Instructors: Associate editors supervising the reviewers in a peer review situation.
Target Audience of Manuscript Review Learners: The target audience consists of researchers, clinicians, and other health professionals practicing in Pulmonary, Critical Care, or Sleep Medicine who possess expertise in the content areas assigned and wish to improve by means of service as an expert reviewer.
Measured Outcomes: Results are measured through learner self report in the activity evaluation and through objective observation by the supervising associate editors who assure the review meets CME requirements.
CME Activity Learning Objectives
- Have the ability to critique and improve research design and evidence base and apply these skills to one’s own research.
- Have the ability to identify important areas for improvement in the presentation and organization of the manuscript, data, tables, and figures.
- Know how to conduct a confidential review without conflict of interest.
- Know how to provide a standardized, concise, constructive and timely evaluation that is balanced and objective avoiding any personal comments.
- Learn to identify potential conflicts of interest of the authors and note any ethical concerns, including plagiarism, falsification of data, image forensics, or duplicate publication.
- Learn and incorporate into practice improved patient care based on the latest state of the art in the learners’ field presented within assigned manuscripts.
- Know how to apply the desirable attributes of a proper review contained in the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (URM Guidelines).
- Able to pass-on acquired competence through teaching.
