Welcome to the website of the Assembly on Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR). Ours is the newest assembly of the 13 ATS Assemblies. We grew from a broad base of interested members from around the world, who have a variety of complementary educational, clinical and research interests. We achieved full assembly status in ATS in 2008. We are delighted to encourage further growth of our multidisciplinary membership as well as to enjoy our many international members. Both are in keeping with the nature of our discipline. We also remain very open to linkages with other Assemblies of the ATS. Our leadership has fostered growing and productive linkages with the ERS and we see this as an important step in harmonizing activities in the PR area between the two societies.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation, as a discipline, has moved from a peripheral interest to mainstream in the management of chronic respiratory conditions. The rapid accumulation of scientific evidence born of well designed clinical trials, with valid, reproducible and interpretable outcomes has made ours an evidence based discipline recommended by professional associations around the world, in their guidelines for the management of those with COPD. Sound scientific data is also emerging in support of the effectiveness of PR in other respiratory conditions including conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, thoracic restriction and pulmonary hypertension as well as it being used pre and post-operatively for thoracic surgery. The optimal treatment of individuals with chronic respiratory disease requires combining non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic therapies. It also requires management across the disease spectrum and at different times when patients may be clinically stable or immediately post exacerbation. As a result PR has become a key component of the integrated care of patients with chronic respiratory diseases.
