TO Mentoring Program

This Mentoring Program is an opportunity for all junior TO members (mentees) attending the annual ATS International Conference to meet with an assigned senior TO members (mentor) and join in the TO Assembly reception during the meeting.

The program's mission is to welcome new members to the TO Assembly and ATS meeting, help our large Assembly and Meeting feel smaller/more personal for new/junior attendees and create a supportive community for the career development of our next generation of pulmonary/critical care medicine students, physicians and investigators. While the only expectation for the mentee-mentor pairing is to interact at the meeting, continued exchange beyond would be a welcomed outcome.

Typically, there will be an informal social event on the Monday at ATS from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. for mentees to meet with their mentors, followed by the TO Assembly membership. You and your mentor can arrange for a one-to-one meeting at any other mutually agreed upon time during the conference.

Anyone can sign up to be a mentee or a mentor (or both). Mentors and mentees are asked to provide us with some brief information about scholarly activities, research, and goals to facilitate the pairings.

We would like to thank the volunteer mentors in advance for their participation in this program and their investment of time and expertise in the TO membership and future of our Assembly. The success of this program will rely on the generosity of TO members who are willing to share their insights and experience with others.

Expectations for Mentors

The key role of the mentor is to direct the mentee's professional development, and provide career guidance. In addition, the role of the mentor is to aid the fellow to explore the available research opportunities.

Mentors

  • Offer advice in course work, research training, career development or a topic of high priority to the mentee as indicated in the survey; and provide constructive feedback
  • Is responsible to make the time for the mentee at the meeting.

Expectations for Mentees

  • It is the responsibility of the mentee to reach out to the mentor to start the mentorship
  • Mentee should identify developmental needs and set development goals prior to meeting with the mentor
  • Prepare a short bio and CV to share with your mentor via the survey and when you and your mentor first meet.
