Pulmonary & Critical Care Network Veterans Administration

Co-Chairs: James K. Brown, MD, San Francisco VA Medical Center, San Francisco, CA, Antonio Anzueto, MD, University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, TX, and William C. Yarbrough, MD, U. T. Southwestern Medical Center

The Department of Veterans Affairs is the largest integrated health care system in the country with strong commitment towards pulmonary diseases and critical care. Pulmonary diseases such as COPD, infections etc. are one of the top chronic diseases treated in the VA system, and are responsible for a significant number of hospital admissions and re-admission. Furthermore, these conditions contribute to the development of critical illness. Critical Care in the VA facilities are more complex due to older patient population and presence of multiple co-morbid conditions. This meeting will also highlight status of Research at the VA, including review of current programs and opportunities for future funding. The group’s objectives are as follows:

  • Learn about the State of Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care and Research at the Veterans Administration Health Care System.
  • Discuss the implementation of sleep program at VA facilities.
  • Learn about the VA Critical Care Network, its objectives and current activities.
  • Understand the current state of Research in the VA System.
