The Disaster in Japan
Dear Colleagues,
As you’ve no doubt read or heard in the news, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan have caused considerable death and destruction. At times like this, our thoughts are with our colleagues, their families, and all those whose lives are affected by this tragedy. We are understandably and profoundly saddened by the occurrence of a natural disaster that we were powerless to prevent.
We can, however, help to lessen some of the suffering. Below is a list of agencies compiled by the NBC station in Los Angeles. No doubt there are other groups helping as well. I hope you will lend your support to one of them.
- LA-based Operation USA is preparing to aid in the relief effort. Donate here.
- The Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund was launched by GlobalGiving.org right away and has already raised almost $28,000 in relief funds and the number is quickly rising. Click to donate.
- The American Red Cross is mobilizing efforts in Japan. To donate to the Red Cross, go to Redcross.org or text REDCROSS 90999 to donate $10 from your phone.
- Save the Children is also accepting donations through their Children's Emergency Fund program.
- You can also donate through International Medical Corps and find out other ways to contribute to their medical response efforts here.
- The aid group Americares is mobilizing resources and dispatching an emergency response manager to the region. You can donate to their effort here.
- World Vision is accepting donations and will rush food, water, medical supplies, and shelter through their Disaster Response Fund.
