2013 ATS Research Grant Recipients

This year, the ATS Foundation awarded 22 new grants and awards to early-career investigators from all over the world engaged in pulmonary, sleep, and critical care research.

ATS Foundation Recognition Awards for Outstanding Early Career Investigators - $40,000

This year, the ATS Foundation introduced the Recognition Awards for Outstanding Early Career Investigator Awards to address the ramifications of federal sequestration of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research dollars. Currently, 6% of NIH applications are funded, on average, making it very difficult for early career investigators to transition to established researchers. The new ATS Foundation awards provide financial support to investigators who came close to, but did not meet, the NIH (or international equivalent) paylines. The awards are intended to help investigators generate preliminary data or take courses to strengthen their original applications, increasing the probability of funding when they resubmit their proposals to the NIH.

These grants allow investigators to pursue research in any disease-state not already covered by our partner grants (see below).

Grants-for-Hire Program- $ 25,500

ATS contracts with several organizations to provide grant services. The ATS Foundation provides administrative support and performs a rigorous scientific review for the Aerocrine and the Pulmonary Hypertension Association research programs. In return for these services, the ATS Foundation receives a fee, which is funneled back into unrestricted and partner research grants. The Grants-for-Hire Program represents a strategic and unique way to reduce administrative costs associated with holding a grant review meeting and staffing across various grant-giving organizations in order to maximize the number of research grants that can be awarded each year.
