Current ATS Foundation Research Program Unrestricted Grant Opportunities

15 grants available
$40,000 for 1 year
Target audience:
Investigators interested in basic science, translational, or clinical research in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine
The focus of these research grants is to support early career investigators interested in research that advances theknowledge and understanding of the American Thoracic Society's three pillers: pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. A primary goal of the ATS Foundation Research Program is to enable new investigators the chance to make the transition to careers as established investigators. The ATS Foundation encourages international and domestic applications in basic, patient-oriented, and public health topics. In the area of public health, the ATS Foundation is particularly interested in funding projects that will inform health policy decisions. These include projects that explore the quality and safety of a specific treament and compare the effectiveness of different therapies. Investigators may apply for unrestricted funding if their proposals do not meet the criteria defined by the ATS Foundation partner awards.
The ATS Foundation research program will award three grants to the top scores in each of the three society pillars: pulmonary, critical care, and sleep.* The remaining nine grants will be awarded to the top scores regardless of category of submission. The ATS Foundation will award up to fifteen unrestricted research grants for $40,000 for one year for salaries, supplies, or a combination of these two. Indirect costs will not be paid to the sponsoring institution.
Award-specific eligibililty:
• Junior investigators (as defined here)
• Must meet eligibility requirements for all grants found here

*While it is intended that there be three awards in each pillar (pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine), the ATS Scientific Advisory Committee reserves the right to alter this distribution dependent upon the significant scientific merit of applications.

REVIEW PROCESS

Please note that after you submit your application it will be reviewed by Research Program staff. If there are any problems or if these guidelines have not been followed, your proposal will be un-submitted. Please makes sure that you check your email after you submit your application so that any outstanding issues may be addressed as quickly as possible.

The ATS Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) will review the applications in November 2017. The membership of the SAC is listed on the ATS Website and additional ad hoc reviewers will be invited to participate as needed. Funding decisions will be made on the basis of scientific merit, novelty, and responsiveness to the purpose of the specific grant program.

ATS POLICY ON ADDITIONAL GRANT FUNDING

Simultaneous submission of grants with scientific overlap is allowed, but if multiple applications are funded, then the applicant must notify the Research Program within one month of formal notification of award. A subcommittee of the SAC will assess degree of overlap. In case of significant scientific overlap the applicant will have to choose between the ATS Foundation research grant and the other grant. Budgetary overlap is not allowed.
