Ready your device for daylight saving time

March 2007

Column Editor - Tom Stibolt

The United States Congress has changed the dates for daylight saving time (DST) in the United States starting in 2007. Canada has adopted similar DST dates. Many PDA’s automatically adjust for going on & off of daylight saving time but are set up for the old system where the change occurred the first Sunday in April and the last Sunday in October. The new standard is the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November.

Although there were a lot of notes posted on the Palm website about the need for them to do something about the change, it turns out the solution was already built into devices running PalmOS 5.0 or above. In fact, this version of the PalmOS supports any possible start and stop dates for daylight savings time. In order to update your system for the new standard, do the following.

Select the Prefs application. You will see the screen shown below on the left. Click on Date & Time which will bring you to the screen shown in the center below. Note that whatever home city you have selected will show in place of Portland. Click on the city name which will bring up your list of cities which should look somewhat like the screen on the lower right.. Note the “Edit List…” option at the bottom. Click on that option.

The screen shown below on the left will display with your city list displayed. Click on your home city then the Edit icon which will bring you to the screen shown in the center. The check should be set in the “This location observes Daylight Saving Time” should be set if you are in a location that does observe daylight time. Click on the Start: information which will bring up the screen on the right below. Select the month, week and day for the beginning of daylight time then click OK. Repeat this for the End: information then click OK. This takes you back to the city list at which point you click the Done icon which takes you back to the Date & Time Preferences screen where you again click the Done icon. You are now set up for daylight saving time.

If you have a device running an older version of PalmOS, this will not work. For these devices, there is an application available for free. It is called DST Panel and is available from Handango (www.handango.com). The easiest way to find this is to go to the website and type “DST panel” into the search box. Download it and install it on your device.

If you have a Windows Mobile device, Microsoft has updates for all versions of Windows Mobile at their website, www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/daylightsaving/default.mspx. The site provides detailed instructions to take you through the process of updating your device.
