Structure and Function of the Upper Airway: Implications for Sleep Apnea

Introducing the Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology Assembly’s first ever web-based “LEARNING IN SLEEP” educational tool.

Builds on the standards for training programs, continuing education, and recertification in pulmonary and internal medicine found in the 2005 ATS statement “Curriculum and Competency Assessment Tools for Sleep Disorders in Pulmonary Fellowship Training Programs.”

Objectives: At the conclusion of this webcast, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomic regions of the upper airway and sort structure and function into active and passive components
  • List the features of the respiratory control system relevant to apnea
  • Define treatment modalities for obstructive sleep apnea in physiological terms
