ATS 2008 * Toronto![]() David H. Ingbar, MD ![]() Monica Kraft, MD Dear Colleague: We are pleased to invite you to attend ATS 2008 • Toronto, the International Conference of the American Thoracic Society. The ATS meeting is one of the largest gatherings of Pulmonary and Critical Care clinicians and researchers in the world. Last year’s conference in San Francisco was attended by over 16,000 people from 90 countries, and we expect this year’s meeting in Toronto to be even more exciting and diverse. The conference program will offer information on the latest and most significant developments in clinical practice, in research (clinical, basic, and translational), in health advocacy, and in education. ATS 2008 • Toronto will include topics such as sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, multiple organ dysfunction, obesity and lung health, interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, pleural disease and drug-resistant tuberculosis. The Clinical Year in Review, Clinical Topics in Pulmonary Medicine, and the Critical Care Track offer focused, in depth education. Scientific and translational sessions will examine genetics, the biology of hypoxia, airway hyperresponsiveness, lung injury and inflammation, and the lung matrix. The ATS presents a thriving, interactive venue for the presentation of original research, and last year 5,586 scientific abstracts were presented at the meeting. A major strength of our International Conference is the ability of clinicians and researchers to interact and to exchange ideas. The ATS encourages the participation of international attendees and of trainees at all levels of education. Once again this year, the Center for Clinicians and Fellows will allow attendees to interact with faculty on a one-on-one basis. For trainees, the Fellows’ Clinical Case Symposium and a career development postgraduate course will be highlights. Attending the International Conference is also an excellent way to become involved with ATS activities and committees. Plan to attend your assembly’s Membership Meeting to find out more and to volunteer. Toronto is Canada’s largest city and considered its economic capital. This international city offers a wide variety of entertainment options for visitors including theater, ballet and dance companies, opera companies and symphony orchestras.
