ATS Research Program

Science is a core value of the American Thoracic Society (ATS). It forms the foundation for the care that our members provide to their patients. Science provides the most essential means for understanding health and disease, discovering cures, and improving the quality of life of the patients we serve. As the ATS has strived to produce first-class medical and scientific journals and attract the world’s top scientists to its premier International Conference in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine, the Society’s dedication to research as an essential focus of its mission is quite evident.

In late 2002, when the ATS Board of Directors voted unanimously to create a new Research Program, the Society was further enhancing its strong commitment to the ideals of research. Since that historical moment, the ATS Research Program has steadily grown and continues to thrive. The Research Program operates under the critical guiding principles of partnership and collaboration. From the genesis of the Program, the ATS realized that maximal progress could be made in research if the Society worked in harmony with other organizations focusing on the diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment of lung disease. The Research Program operates under the intention that the ATS will set research priorities and share funding responsibilities with other medical, research, clinical, professional, corporate, patient, and nonprofit health organizations with interests in pulmonary and critical care diseases and disorders.

Be a Part of the ATS Research Program

The ATS Research Program depends on funding assistance from its partners and from generous individuals interested in assisting in the fight against lung disease. Since its beginnings in 2002, the Program has grown steadily as new partners have joined and generous individuals have lent support. With each new year the ATS has the goal of offering additional grants to support more research in its efforts to work steadily towards ultimately understanding and even curing lung disease for future generations. If you or your organization are interested in helping join the fight against lung disease by assisting the ATS in its Research Program, please contact:
