Over the weekend we learned that presidential nominee Hillary Clinton had been diagnosed with pneumonia. American Thoracic Society (ATS) member and pneumonia expert Michael Niederman, MD, is positioned to speak on the illness and treatment. Dr. Neiderman leads the acute pneumonia working group at ATS.

1. Pneumonia is a common but potentially serious illness that runs a gamut of severity from mild to life threatening
2. Although there is a vaccine for pneumonia, it is effective only against certain types, not all pneumonia
3. Most patients with community-acquired pneumonia, recover fully and rapidly, and outpatient pneumonia is rarely complicated.
