Mary C. Kapella PhD, RN

What is your current position?

Mary C. Kapella PhD, RN
Assistant Professor
Dept. of Biobehavioral Health Science
Interim Director, Center for Narcolepsy, Sleep & Health Research
University of Illinois at Chicago
College of Nursing

What are you passionate about in your work?

I especially enjoy working with our wonderful undergraduate and graduate students at UIC College of Nursing and our dedicated research staff and study participants.

Tell us about a memorable patient or student that you worked with or a memorable experience in your nursing career.

I worked for over 20 years as a critical care nurse in a hospital where I developed an interest in COPD. I have been at UIC for over 16 years and I am currently conducting COPD research.

Tell us about your latest or favorite research or clinical project.

My favorite area of teaching is evidence-based practice in nursing. In our current research we are testing components of insomnia therapy for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who have problems falling asleep or staying asleep.

Tell us about your family (2 and/or 4 legged) and how you spend your leisure time (yes, hopefully you have leisure time).

My husband Steve and I have been married for over 30 years.  Our family includes 2 grown kids, Wendy and Matthew, and 2 beautiful Silken Windhound dogs, Rosie and Pearlie.

How has your view of nursing changed over the years?

I've been a nurse for over 39 years and seen so much change. I'm very proud of the progress we've made!

How long have you been a member of ATS?

I have been a member of ATS since 1998. My membership in ATS has enabled me to keep up with changes in respiratory and sleep research and practice and serve on great committees. I've enjoyed networking, visiting with friends and meeting new friends who are interested in respiratory and sleep nursing.
