The Screen and Stage - Lung Cancer Screening, Prevention, Diagnosis, and Staging

Lung Cancer Screening Implementation Guide

Lung Cancer screening is now recommended for those considered at “high risk” for developing lung cancer, which includes anyone age 55-80 who is a current smoker or quit smoking in the last 15 years and smoked the equivalent of 30 "pack years" (1 pack a day for 30 years, 2 packs for 15 years, or any combination of years and packs that equals 30).

For screening to be effective, it requires careful coordination between referring providers, hospitals, radiologists, pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, and oncologists (both medical and radiation). The American Thoracic Society and American Lung Association have published a guide to assist community hospitals and health care systems effectively implement an effective Lung Cancer Screening program.
