Sarcoidosis Week at the ATS

Sarcoidosis Week

Sarcoidosis is a potentially fatal inflammatory disease that can appear in almost any organ in the body.  Although the lungs are affected in more than 90% of patients, the disease often attacks the heart, eyes, central nervous system, liver and kidneys.

Through our work representing the American Thoracic Society and the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research, we recognize the harsh reality that for many people this disease is chronic and debilitating, while at the same time the diverse manifestations present varied challenges for clinicians.  We are encouraged that ‘Lung Week at the ATS’ represents both a unique opportunity and an important stride in bringing needed attention to sarcoidosis and a range of other rare diseases.

Since 2005, ATS and FSR have awarded $750,000+ to support this emerging field of inflammatory disease research.  Two researchers have made breakthroughs that have generated an additional $1 million in grants and in 2010 an investigator at Johns Hopkins discovered a new link between sarcoidosis and overproduction of a specific protein trigger.  Together we are making progress, but there is much more that we can do.

We are united in the belief that through increased research, discovering disease causes and improving treatments for the patients we serve are possible.  We look forward to the many opportunities that our continued collaboration can offer and hope that health professionals and the public will take the opportunity to learn more about sarcoidosis throughout the week.

ATS Sarcoidosis PARtner — Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research

The Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research (FSR) is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving care for sarcoidosis patients and to finding a cure for this disease.

The FSR believes that rigorous and extensive scientific research will unlock the mysteries of this disease. In the last five years of the partnership with the American Thoracic Society, collectively the two organizations have awarded $750,000 to support innovative research projects which have led to an additional $1.2 million in subsequent awards to sarcoidosis researchers.
