Treasurer-elect Position

The American Thoracic Society is seeking nominations for candidates to be elected by the ATS Board of Directors to serve on the ATS Executive Committee as Treasurer for 2025-2028. The position of Treasurer is critical for the ATS, as this individual spends three years providing guidance, oversight, and reporting of the Society’s finances. It is important that ATS identifies outstanding members who will ensure the Society continues to accelerate global innovation in the advancement of respiratory health through multidisciplinary collaboration, education, and advocacy.

We ask that you carefully consider the following qualifications and submit nominations of colleagues who demonstrate the characteristics outlined below. Self-nominations are also accepted.

Qualifications:

  • Active ATS member; in good standing.
  • ATSFellow designation, or candidate for ATSF.
  • Active commitment to and understanding of ATS and its mission, vision and values.
  • Demonstration of the essential leadership characteristics (see below).
  • Ability to commit three years of service in various leadership capacities.
  • Willingness to adhere to the CMSS Code for Interactions with Companies as it relates to Key Leaders.
  • Solid understanding and experience with financial accounting and investments for academic healthcare organizations.

Essential Leadership Characteristics:
The applicants for the position of ATS Treasurer should possess the following characteristics:

  • Professionalism
  • Demonstration of ability to support a diverse and inclusive team
  • Outstanding political acumen/administrative skills;
  • Scientific credibility/appreciation;
  • Excellent organizational ability;
  • Inclusive style of leadership;
  • Commitment to work with international societies;
  • Highly regarded in the field;
  • Passion for/commitment to ATS;
  • Willingness to devote time to the ATS;
  • Knowledge and sense of ATS organization.
  • Familiarity with key aspects of the organization, including research, education, and advocacy.

Job Responsibilities:

  • The Treasurer is a full member of the ATS Executive Committee and shares responsibility for leadership of the ATS and decision-making about ATS activities and positions with other Executive Committee members under the leadership of the President and with the direction and oversight of the ATS Board of Directors.
  • The Treasurer position is a three-year term, selected by the Board of Directors, and does not advance to presidency.
  • The Treasurer shall work with the ATS Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer to ensure appropriate financial reports (e.g. IRS 990) are made available to the Executive Committee/Board and filed on a timely basis.
  • The Treasurer shall serve as chair of the Finance Committee.
  • The Treasurer shall review organizational financials on a quarterly basis and report to Board of Directors.
  • The Treasurer shall present the annual budget to the Executive Committee and Board for approval.
  • The Treasurer shall review and present the annual audit and present to the Executive Committee and Board.
  • The Treasurer shall periodically evaluate the Society’s financial policies and procedures.
  • In year 2 of the Treasurer's term, a Treasurer-elect will be selected by the Board of Directors to shadow the Treasurer to ensure a seamless transition.

Time Commitment:

  • The Treasurer-elect position serves as an observer, meeting participation is optional.
  • The Treasurer position generally involves approximately 0.15 FTE of time working on behalf of the American Thoracic Society if included into the usual FTE equation.

A stipend will be provided for the Treasurer, the exact amount to be confirmed by the ATS Board of Directors.
