The Membership Committee provides strategic guidance to retain and grow an actively engaged membership with the requisite knowledge, skills, abilities, and values to fulfill the Society’s mission and goals. It annually reviews membership criteria, categories and dues. The Committee also serves as a resource for staff to review issues that arise with applications for membership. It recommends to the Board strategies for growing membership and retaining current members. Finally, the Committee fosters the efforts of members to eliminate gender, racial, ethnic, or economic health disparities worldwide and incorporates approaches to health equity. The Membership Committee continuously evaluates the value of membership and promotes ATS membership benefits.
Benchmarks, 2025-2026:
• Continue the annual ATS Fellow designation program as a mark of distinction and recognition within the Society. Regularly evaluate how the program adds value to ATS membership and refine the process for ATSF designation, particularly for international members. Explore ways to elevate the recognition for Mid-Career Professionals and consider introducing tiered distinctions (e.g., gold, silver, bronze) based on years of designation, with visibility during the conference.
• Organize and host the annual Women’s Forum and related award programs, with ongoing efforts to support career development, leadership, and networking among women. Ensure alignment with the Diversity Forum and explore the development of a year-round initiative focused on women and diversity in medicine. Highlight the leadership of women presidents of respiratory societies during the conference.
• Collaborate with the International Health Committee to create strategies that enhance the relevance of ATS for international members. Focus on increasing their engagement and participation in Society activities.
• Work with the Steering Committee on Advancement and Learning (SCALe) to develop initiatives that increase the value of ATS membership for new members, trainees, and those transitioning to faculty. This includes enhancing online career development resources and promoting ATS to underrepresented minorities in collaboration with SCALe and the Health Equity and Diversity Committee.
• Collaborate with SCALe to assess the Society’s programs for early- and mid-career professionals. Conduct a gap analysis to better understand their educational and career development needs, and recommend improvements and measurable outcomes.
• Finalize, approve, and implement the ATS Anniversary Program.
• Strengthen member retention and recruitment by tracking key metrics such as annual renewals, new member growth, and re-engagement of lapsed members. These efforts will be guided by the forthcoming Membership Strategic Plan. Special emphasis will be placed on first-year members and early engagement through targeted outreach and programming. By using data to inform strategy, ATS can build stronger connections and deliver lasting value to its members.
