The Scientific Grant Review Committee provides strategic guidance for the Society’s research programs and scientific policies and is primarily responsible for the direct oversight for the process of reviewing grants applications to the ATS Research Program. The Committee provides oversight for the ATS Research Program and works with ATS staff on identifying additional extramural sources of funding. It recommends policies to the Board that would further the Society’s science and research mission and objectives, including scientific areas in need of research, and develops collaborations with other societies and organizations to further research in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine with an interest in proposals that advance health equity. The Committee determines the number of Scientific Review Groups and the number of members of each Scientific Review Group needed to provide scientific review for the different grant programs. It also identifies the chair and members of the ATS Scientific Review Groups. Additionally, it determines the process and develops application forms, criteria and guidelines for the various grant opportunities. Oversees the work of the different review groups and selects grants for funding.
Benchmarks, 2026-2027:
- Continue to update and refine orientation materials, expertise survey, and reviewer assignment processes as needed. Hold orientation call at beginning of grant cycle. Implement ad hoc reviewer process as needed for rare disease-focused PAR partner grants.
- Continue to review strategies and resources to reduce implicit bias training during the review process and implement as needed, e.g. provide new committee members with implicit bias training from Harvard as part of on-boarding process.
- Continue to recruit early-career individuals to the committee to train the next generation.
- To promote diversity, revise the Emerging Voices in Health Research grant: The ATS Emerging Voices in Health Research Grant supports early-career researchers from groups that have faced challenges and obstacles to entry and advancement in medicine, research, and academic health professions. Applications are encouraged from individuals who are first-generation college graduates, come from an economically disadvantaged and/or rural backgrounds, or have lived experiences that reflect limited access to advancement opportunities.
- Provide applicants with examples of successful LOIs and full grant applications in basic and translational research on the website. We particularly want to give applicants outside of the U.S. a better chance of competing given the differences in grant applications we commonly see between US and non-U.S. candidates.
- ATS NOW - This committee is responsible for utilizing, promoting, and/or contributing content on the ATS NOW platform. This committee will provide quarterly feedback on the usability, content needs, and areas for improvement.
