Anne-Karina T. Perl, PhD

Anne-Karina Perl obtained her BS (’92), MS (Suma cum laude) (’94) and PhD (’98) from the University of Vienna in Austria. Dr. Perl accomplished her thesis work at the Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna, Austria with Professor Christofori, focusing on dissecting the role of E-Cadherin signaling in pancreatic tumor progression. Dr. Perl stayed on for a short postdoctoral experience in her thesis laboratory and was recognized as Young Scientist of the Year by the Austrian Society of Genetics and Biotechnology in 1998. She received an Erwin Schroedinger Fellowship to support her work in Dr. Jeffrey Whitsett’s lab as a Postdoctoral Fellow (1999-2002), focusing on early lung development and lung cell fate decisions. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati. Dr. Perl was seminal in the development and description of the widely used and very important tetracycline inducible system to either activate or inactivate genes specifically in the mouse lung epithelium. Her studies on linage tracing of lung epithelial cells during embryonic and postnatal lung development have advanced our understanding of early lung progenitors and cell linage relationships. Her current research focuses on alveolar regeneration and bronchiolar repair after chronic Clara cell depletion. She is widely recognized and has developed a national and international reputation as evidenced by speaking invitations in the US and Europe. She serves as reviewer for many scientific journals, as a reviewer on the grant review panel for the lung committee of the American Heart Association. She has been involved with ATS as session facilitator, co-Chair and currently serves on the Abstract programming committee.
