David Gozal, MD, MBA


David Gozal, MD, MBA, PhD (Hon) is the Marie M. and Harry L. Smith Endowed Chair and Chairperson of the Department of Child Health, and Pediatrician-in-Chief, MU Women’s and Children’s Hospital, both at the University of Missouri School of Medicine.  Dr. Gozal’s research focuses primarily on bench to bedside approaches to pediatric sleep disorders. Funded by several National Institutes of Health grants, he studies mechanisms that mediate defense responses, mechanisms that lead to complications from low oxygen levels and disrupted sleep, and long-term health and developmental consequences of chronic sleep and breathing problems during childhood. His projects encompass a wide range of subjects such as gene cellular regulation in hypoxia and sleep disruption, murine models of sleep disorders, and genomic, proteomic, metabolomic approaches to clinical and epidemiological aspects of sleep in children and adults.

Dr. Gozal is deputy editor for the journals Sleep, European Respiratory Journal and Frontiers in Neurology and Frontiers in Psychiatry. He served as president of the American Thoracic Society in 2016-2017.
