John Hughes Newman, M.D.

John Hughes Newman, M.D. currently serves as the Elsa S. Hanigan Professor of Pulmonary Medicine and is the Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program at the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. In addition, since 2005 he has served as Chairman of the Medical Center Medical Board at Vanderbilt.

Dr. Newman received his M.D. from Columbia College of Physician & Surgeons in 1971 and completed his training in cardiovascular pulmonary medicine in 1979 at the University of Colorado Medical Center. Following completion of his research training he joined the staff of Vanderbilt University’s School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor. While on faculty at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Newman served as Chief of Medical Service at Nashville Tennessee Administration Medical Center.

He has authored nearly a hundred original research and clinical papers, and has served on numerous American Thoracic Society committees. Dr. Newman has been invited to give lectures at dozens of events and has been the recipient of numerous awards including most recently the William J. Martin, II Distinguished Achievement Award in 2005.
