Philip Hopewell Prize for Leaders in Global Respiratory Health
The Philip Hopewell Prize for Leaders in Global Respiratory Health is an ATS global research award in recognition of Dr. Philip Hopewell. Dr. Hopewell has for many years served patients and the medical research community worldwide, and his contributions to the development of guidelines and policies are exceptional. In recognition of his lifelong service the Phillip Hopewell Prize for Leaders in Global Respiratory Health has been established.
Mid-career investigators in low- and middle-income countries will be recognized for their clinical and research commitment, including published research in peer-reviewed journals and commitment to global health policy. This award endeavors to support these individuals to become established leaders in Global Respiratory Health by providing longitudinal support for professional development, networking, and mentorship.
Congratulations to our 2023 awardee, William Worodria!

William Worodria, Senior Consultant Physician/ Pulmonologist
William Worodria is an Ugandan physician trained in pulmonology and clinical research. Worodria has worked as a Pulmonary Consultant Physician at Mulago National Referral Hospital, the main referral hospital in Kampala, Uganda, for the last 18 years. Worodria is the Head of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at Mulago Hospital & Complex and an Honorary Professor at Makerere College of Health Sciences, Kampala, Uganda. Worodria is an ATS member, ERS member, and also a founding member of the Uganda Thoracic Society.
Worodria has been involved in translational and epidemiologic studies that have directly improved patient care in low-income settings. They have a specific expertise in pulmonary complications of HIV, including turberculosis and the HIV- TB immune reconstitution syndrome.
