Meet the 2023 Winner: Kevin Cromar, PhD
Kevin Cromar is the Director of the Health, Environment and Policy Program at the Marron Institute of Urban Management and an Associate Professor of Environmental Medicine and Population Health at New York University Grossman School of Medicine.
He has been a member of ATS since 2012 and has served on the nominating committee (2021), planning committee (2012-2018), and programming committee (2016-2020) for the EOPH assembly as well as the ATS Environmental Health Policy Committee (2014-2022). During this time, he has led, organized and contributed to numerous ATS projects, often in collaboration with multiple US federal agencies. The most recent ATS project he led resulted a major update in how health impacts from climate change are considered in social cost of greenhouse gas estimates used in US regulatory analysis.
Cromar has published research on the health effects of air pollution and climate change for a diverse range of health outcomes including respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental health. He has also worked extensively on improving exposure assessment approaches using various technologies for use in health research and risk communication purposes. He is a member of the NASA Health and Air Quality Applied Science Team (HAQAST), the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Air Pollution and Health Technical Advisory Group (GAPH-TAG), serves as the US-lead for the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Health Working Group for the Vegetative Fire and Smoke Pollution Warning and Advisory System (VFSP-WAS), and is a member of the Utah Air Quality Board.
He is a noted expert in environmental health policy with his research and policy efforts leading to direct improvements in energy, transportation, climate, and health policies at the local, national, and international level. His ongoing translational research also includes extensive international capacity building efforts with local officials in Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia, often in partnership with multi-lateral organizations.

This is award is given to a primary EOPH member with exemplary commitment to EOPH (and ATS), to advancing the mission of the assembly, and with demonstrated significant and sustained contributions to the assembly in the areas of research, improving public health, teaching, mentoring, and/or service (may include leadership). Individuals eligible for consideration are more than 10 years from completion of postdoctoral training
Criteria:
- At least 10 years from having completed postdoctoral or clinical training, excluding time off for personal circumstances
- EOPH Assembly Member (primary)
- Exemplary commitment to EOPH and ATS and to advancing the mission of the EOPH assembly
- Significant and sustained contributions to the assembly in the areas of research, improving public health, teaching, mentoring, and/or service (may include leadership)
