Meet the 2023 Winner: Lisa R. Young, MD, ATSF

Lisa R. Young, MD is a pediatric pulmonologist and Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine at the (Penn). She holds the John M. Keating Endowed Chair, Presidential Scholar at CHOP and is also Associate Director of the Penn-CHOP Lung Biology Institute.

Dr. Young received her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and then earned her MD and completed residency training in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at Duke University. She completed fellowship training in Pediatric Pulmonology and Adult Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati, and then joined the faculty. In 2011, she relocated to Vanderbilt, where she was Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, and Cell & Developmental Biology until moving to Philadelphia in 2019.

Dr. Young’s longstanding clinical focus has been in interstitial and other rare lung diseases. Her NIH-funded research program takes both laboratory and patient-oriented approaches to alveolar epithelial biology and mechanistic understanding of diseases, particularly Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome and Neuroendocrine cell Hyperplasia of Infancy. She has led foundational efforts in the field of Childhood Interstitial Lung Diseases, including as the PI of the 25-center National Registry in childhood ILD and rare lung diseases. Dr. Young has also made significant contributions in Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) through studies on serum VEGF-D as a biomarker. She has mentored many trainees and is currently co-PI for a T32 training program on Pediatric Lung Diseases.

Dr. Young has been a member of ATS since 2005. She has co-authored multiple ATS clinical practice guidelines and served on numerous committees, including as the Program Committee Chair for Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology Assembly from 2017-2019. Her scientific and patient advocacy contributions have been recognized in several forums, including with the ATS Public Advisory Roundtable Excellence Award in 2017. Dr. Young is also member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the American Pediatric Society. She is committed to improving child lung health through leadership of outstanding clinical, training, and research program at CHOP and in collaboration with the community of clinicians and investigators across the ATS and worldwide.

 

Description:

This award is given to a mid-career candidate who is recognized for achievements in research, mentorship, clinical care, education, advocacy, or scholarship. Individuals should be known for their contributions to the field of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine. Candidates in Pediatric Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Neonatal Medicine will be considered.

Eligibility:

  1. The nominee must be a member of the ATS.
  2. Nominees must be at the Associate professor level or within <5 years of full Professor, and within 10-20 years from their first academic appointment.
  3. Active contributions to the ATS and the Pediatrics Assembly in the form of Committee Chairmanships will be viewed favorably.
  4. MD and Ph.D. applicants will be accepted.
