Meet the 2022 Winner: James M. Beck, MD, ATSF

Dr. Beck is the Chief of Medicine for the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care at the University of Colorado, and Vice-Chair for Veterans Affairs in the University of Colorado’s Department of Medicine. He received his undergraduate degree in psychology from Tufts University and am an AOA graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. After residency at the University of Pennsylvania, he completed fellowships in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Beck joined the faculty at UCSF in 1990, and then moved to the University of Michigan in 1995. At Michigan, he served as the Associate Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. He was recruited to Colorado in 2012.
Dr. Beck's research interests include HIV-related opportunistic infections and the emerging field of lung microbiome research. Most recently, he was a Principal Investigator for the NHLBI’s Lung HIV Microbiome Project. His clinical achievements have been recognized by selection for Best Doctors in America annually since 1994. He has strong interests in resident and fellow education, and was elected to the University of Colorado’s Academy of Medical Educators in 2014.

This award is given to a PI-TB member with clear commitment to PI-TB and the ATS, advancing their missions, and with significant contribution(s) to the PI-TB Assembly in the area(s) of research, clinical care, teaching, mentoring or service (may include leadership).
Criteria:
- Associate Professor, Professor, or equivalent
- At least 20 years from having completed postdoctoral or clinical training, excluding time off for personal circumstances
- PI-TB Assembly Member (primary or secondary)
- Significant contribution(s) to the PI-TB Assembly in the area(s) of research, clinical care, teaching, mentoring or service, typically including leadership.
