PI-TB Mentoring Program

This Mentoring Program is a fantastic opportunity for all early-career PI-TB members (mentees) to meet with assigned senior PI-TB members (mentors) and get some great one-on-one advice!

The program's mission is to welcome new members to the PI-TB Assembly and the ATS meeting, help make our assembly and huge ATS meeting feel smaller and more personal for new/early career attendees, and create a supportive community for the development of the next generation of students, physicians and investigators.

The goals and expectations of the mentor and mentee are outlined below::

Expectations for Mentors

The key role of the mentor is to direct the mentee's professional development and provide career guidance. The mentor may discuss research opportunities, offer advice on finding mentorship/guidance, and provide tips on how to establish collaborations.

  • Introduce yourself and start a dialog with the assigned mentee by virtual or digital means. Mentorship can extend beyond this initial meeting if the Mentor and Mentee choose to, but that is not mandatory.
  • The mentor may offer advice in coursework or research training and provide constructive feedback if this is an area the mentee requests. The mentor should help establish a strategy for a mentees' career development.
  • Arrange a virtual meeting and advise on the mentee's short- and long-term goals and assist in strategizing to achieve these goals.

Expectations for Mentees

  • It is the responsibility of the mentee to reach out to the mentor to start the mentorship. Introduce yourself and start a dialog with your assigned mentor by virtual or digital means.
  • The mentee should identify developmental needs and set development goals prior to the meeting. At a minimum, prior to meeting with the mentor, the mentee should write down three goals for the discussion.
  • The mentee should also write down three things that s/he would like to get out of the mentoring relationship.
  • Arrange for a digital/virtual meeting at a time that works for both. Be proactive about communication, while being considerate of your mentor's time.

Anyone can sign-up to be a mentor, but mentees should be in training or under five years out of their terminal training program. Prospective mentors and mentees will be asked to provide us with some brief information about scholarly activities, research, and goals to facilitate the pairings in an online survey (which takes less than 5 minutes to complete).
