BSHSR Mentoring Program

BSHSR / Section on Medical Education Mentoring Program

Goals

  1. Support junior faculty and trainees in attaining their career goals through individualized mentorship.
  2. Provide hybrid mentoring; mentees and mentors can connect virtually or in person at the ATS International Conference.
  3. Increase junior faculty and trainee participation in the BSHSR Assembly and ATS committees.
  4. Help mentees gain perspective and feedback on their academic endeavors.
  5. Create potential for collaborative research or writing endeavors.

Expectations for Mentors

  1. Introduce yourself and start a dialogue with the assigned mentee.
  2. Email CV to the mentee.
  3. Identify realistic goals for relationship keeping in mind how you can use your own experiences to mentor and support the mentee.
  4. Arrange to meet virtually or at the ATS International Conference in May. We ask the mentee to take the lead in setting this up. This can occur at a time and location of your choosing.  We encourage you to use our mentoring meeting space which will have refreshments. 

Expectations for Mentees

  1. Introduce yourself and start a dialogue with the assigned mentor.
  2. Email CV to mentor.
  3. Share short and long-term goals with mentor – why are you seeking a BSHSR mentor?
  4. Be proactive about communication, while being considerate of your mentor's time. 
  5. Arrange to meet virtually or at the ATS International Conference in May. As mentee, we expect you to take the lead in arranging the face-to-face meeting.  We encourage you to use our mentoring meeting space which will have refreshments.
