Expectations for Mentors

The key role of the mentor is to provide guidance for the mentee's professional development and career advice. In addition, the role of the mentor is to aid the mentee to explore the available research opportunities. Mentorship can extend beyond the initial 30-minute virtual meeting if the mentor and mentee choose, but this is not mandatory.

  • Introduce yourself and start a dialog with the assigned mentee by virtual or digital means.
  • Assist in developing the mentee's short- and long-term goals and set a clear timeline for achieving these goals. Examples of goals may be abstract or grant submissions.
  • Offer advice in practice, research, or academia, or specialty area; and provide constructive feedback.
  • Establish a strategy for the mentee's career development.
  • Arrange a time to connect virtually with the assigned mentee.

Expectations for Mentees

  • Introduce yourself and start a dialog with your assigned mentor by virtual or digital means. Prepare a short bio, resume, or CV to share with your mentor when you first connect.
  • The mentee should identify developmental needs and set development goals
  • Prior to meeting with your mentor, write down three things that you would like to achieve through mentoring.
  • It is the responsibility of the mentee to contact the mentor to find a convenient time to meet virtually. Arrange a time to connect virtually.
