Virtual Procedural Supervision: Teaching in the Pandemic Era and Beyond

Webinar Date: November 30, 2020

Teaching invasive bedside procedures in the ICU is a complex and pivotal educational role of critical care physicians. These complexities are compounded further in the COVID-19 era with a charge to provide effective patient care, protect healthcare workers, and steward personal protective equipment without sacrificing learner experience. One rising adaptation to balance these demands is virtual procedural supervision.

Please join our panel of discussants as they skillfully share their career expertise in procedural teaching and experiences with virtual supervision in the ICU. Attendees will learn about existing evidence-based models and best practices for procedural teaching, how to translate these practices into virtual supervision when in-person teaching may not be practical or possible, as well as the key elements and caveats to putting virtual procedural supervision into practice.

Dr. Anna Brady is an Associate Program Director for Education in the PCCM Fellowship at Oregon Health & Sciences University and co-author of “Procedural Teaching” in Medical Education in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine: Advanced Concepts and Strategies. Dr. Diana Kelm is an Associate Program Director for the PCCM Fellowship program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and course director for the central line workshops of both the pulmonary and critical care fellowship and internal medicine residency programs. Dr. Kavitha Gopalratnam is a core faculty member in the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Yale with an interest in improving methods for procedural teaching and specific experience in the utilization of virtual procedural supervision. Dr. Rick Koubek is Associate Chief Fellow in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
